El Paso International Airport (ELP) is the primary commercial airport serving the El Paso region and one of the busiest airports in Texas. Operated by the City of El Paso, the airport serves millions of travelers annually and is committed to long-term infrastructure investment, sustainability, and resilient operations for the communities it serves.
Big Sun Solar partnered with El Paso International Airport to design and install a large-scale solar canopy system across two key parking facilities: the Rental Car Center and the Premium Reserved Parking Lot. The installation features 5,200 solar panels covering more than 144,000 square feet of parking infrastructure, delivering clean energy while providing shaded parking for travelers and visitors. Funded in part through a $3 million FAA Airport Improvement Program grant and $1.75 million in U.S. Department of Energy Community Project Funding, the project stands as one of the largest municipal solar installations in El Paso and demonstrates how airports can convert underutilized surface area into productive energy assets.
"Big Sun Solar did an incredible job right here in El Paso. There's so much opportunity we have in the area of solar and sustainable energy like this. So I think we'll see more of this rolled out here at the airport and across El Paso. So this is just the beginning."
