The UIW School of Osteopathic Medicine stands as one of the newest medical schools in Texas, and a vital part of one of the state's oldest Catholic universities. We admitted our first class of 162 students in July 2017. We advance a nearly 140-year-old UIW tradition of providing medical care and education across South Texas. Texas ranks 47th in number of physicians per patient, and 57% of the state's medically underserved people live in our School of Medicine's service areas.
Rooftop
The University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) strengthened its commitment to sustainability with the installation of a new rooftop solar system at the School of Osteopathic Medicine library. Completed by San Antonio-based Big Sun Solar, the project demonstrates how higher education institutions can lead by example in environmental responsibility and financial stewardship. The 100-panel system, manufactured locally by Mission Solar in San Antonio, will generate more than 81,982 kilowatt-hours of clean energy annually. That output offsets nearly 8% of the library’s electricity use, reducing greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to recycling more than 180,000 pounds of waste each year. By leveraging $88,542 in federal and local incentives through the Inflation Reduction Act and CPS Energy rebates, UIW maximized the project’s return while ensuring long-term savings. The installation is expected to save the university approximately $9,757 annually in electricity costs, freeing up resources to further support students, faculty, and community programs.

“Access to clean, renewable energy is not just a privilege — it’s a right. Everyone deserves the benefits of solar that support a healthier, more sustainable future.”
