Interconnection Agreement

An interconnection agreement is the official contract between a solar system owner and their local utility company that defines how the solar installation will safely and legally connect to the electrical grid. This agreement is a crucial step in the solar installation process, as it ensures that both the customer and the utility understand the technical and regulatory requirements for operating a grid-connected system.

The interconnection agreement specifies important details such as equipment standards, safety protocols, metering configurations, and inspection procedures. It ensures that the solar system meets all local codes and utility standards for voltage, frequency, and protection devices—preventing potential disruptions to the broader electrical network.

In addition to technical requirements, the agreement also outlines the financial and operational terms for energy exchange. This includes how excess power sent to the grid will be measured and credited, how maintenance or system upgrades should be handled, and the responsibilities of both parties in the event of outages or grid maintenance.

By establishing clear expectations and safety measures, an interconnection agreement helps guarantee that solar energy systems operate efficiently, safely, and in harmony with the utility grid—benefiting both the customer and the community.
